Iron Infusions

Iron infusions replace iron directly into the bloodstream through a drip when iron levels are low and tablets aren't working or aren't suitable. Our doctors will assess whether an infusion is right for you and arrange the treatment in the clinic.

Why Might You Need an Iron Infusion?

We may recommend an iron infusion if you have:

  • Iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia confirmed by blood tests
  • Difficulty tolerating oral iron tablets
  • Poor absorption of iron
  • Ongoing blood loss, such as heavy periods
  • Persistent tiredness, breathlessness or low energy linked to low iron

What to Expect

  • Before booking: Recent blood test results are required before you can book your consultation.
  • The treatment: We use Ferinject (ferric carboxymaltose), dissolved in normal saline. A standard infusion is 250 ml and contains 500 mg of iron.
  • The infusion: The infusion itself takes around 15 minutes.
  • Afterwards: You will need to remain in the practice for 30 minutes after the infusion so we can monitor you for any allergic reaction.
  • Fees: The fee depends on the dose of iron infused. Your doctor will confirm the cost at your consultation.
